![]() Dewey defined reflective thinking as “active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in light of the groups that support it and the future conclusions to which is tends” (p. Reflective thought consists of giving serious consideration to a subject and connecting the subject to both past and future actions. Dewey insisted reflective thought be a goal of education. John Dewey (1933) provides some of the earliest insight into the significance of reflection. The research questions for this study are: How do students perceive reflection? Which method of reflectionĭo students prefer (i.e., journaling, discussion, creative)? What role do college students perceive reflection plays in their lives? Conceptual and Theoretical Frame To better understand how students reflect, it is important to discover how students perceive reflection. The literature concerning reflection is rooted in experiential education, with some emphasis on curricular programs. This study will explore the function of reflection in the formal classroom setting and their co-curricular experiences. The purpose of this study is to discover how students perceive the role of reflection. As leadership educators rely on structured reflection, research that uncovers student’s perceptions of the role of reflection in leadership learning could contribute to the field of leadership studies and higher education on both a practitioner level as well as a theoretical level. Boswell dubbed this “The Structure Trap” (p. Boswell found students preferred unguided conversation to structured activities. She found while students generally disliked many of the structured reflection activities, they had positive feedback about specific activities. Boswell (2010) explored students’ perception of reflection following an immersion service trip. Previous research focused on specific classroom approaches to reflection, both in service-learning classes as well as leadership classes, and on how student learning is enhanced by reflection (Ash & Clayton, 2004 Ash & Clayton, 2009 Boyd & Williams, 2010 Moore, Boyd, & Dooley, 2010). Reflection is a feature of several paradigms that make up the postindustrial model of leadership (Kezar, 2006), making it important to understand the role reflection plays in students’ lives and as part of the leadership learning process. 4) to a process-oriented view that concedes leadership can be learned by everyone. Northouse (2001) describes the transition from trait- oriented leadership, which viewed leadership as “special innate or inborn characteristics” (p. Alternatively, the emerging post-industrial leadership paradigm is relational, process-oriented, and value-centered (Rost, 1991). Throughout the 20th leadership was characterized as what Rost (1991) termed industrial leadership which “focused primarily on the individual as leader, promoting command and control models, power and authority, rational and analytical thinking, and strong managerial influences” (p. This phenomenological study will explore students’ perception of the role of reflection in leadership education. ![]() Guthrie and Thompson (2010) highlight the importance of leadership education being a “balanced mix of three elements: formal education in theories and principles of leadership, practical experience, and reflection on experiences in light of formal education” (p. Service-learning is only one experience where students could benefit from reflective activities. Service-learning is an experiential learning pedagogy that deliberately integrates community service activities with educational objectives where “reflection activities provide theīridge between the community service activities and the educational content of the course” (Bringle & Hatcher, 1999, paragraph 4). Service-learning, a type of experiential education, combines classroom instruction with organized service to the community, emphasizing civic engagement, reflection, and application of learning (Ash & Clayton, 2004 Bringle & Hatcher, 1996 Bringle & Hatcher, 2009 Eyler & Giles, 1999 Hatcher & Bringle, 1997 Speck, 2001 Strait & Lima, 2009). Much of what we know about reflection is rooted in experiential learning literature. Educators facilitate the process by which students derive meaning from experiences through reflection. Kolb (1984) identified reflection as a significant component in the learning cycle. Ash and Clayton (2009) suggest students do not learn from experiences alone learning depends upon the level to which students reflect on their experiences. College students learn from experiences both in and out of the classroom (Light, 2001 Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005).

It is concluded that some children have literacy skills as a result of the experiences that their parents provide. Significant relationships were showed in literacy, related to father educational level t(11) = 2.78, p = 0.019 approach to books t(12) = 3.90, p = 0.001 and frequency of storytelling t(12) = 4.3X p = 0.002. Both results were complemented for comparison of what with test scores of children in emergent literacy skills. session of mother-child interaction, using different materials, and other literacy experiences self-reported by mothers, something seldom investigated in the field. Evidence is presented that considered in the same study, the analysis of both explicit and implicit experiences observed in a. From a purposive sample, 39 dyads (mother and child) were selected starting preschool from a private school in the State of Mexico. The goal of this study was investigated if literacy experiences that parents provide were differentially related to children literacy. We conclude that shared book reading to preconventional readers may be part of a continuum of out-of-school reading experiences that facilitate children's language, reading, and spelling achievement throughout their development. Interestingly, poor readers also appear to benefit from independent leisure time reading. Moderate associations of print exposure with academic achievement indicate that frequent readers are more successful students. For example, in preschool and kindergarten print exposure explained 12% of the variance in oral language skills, in primary school 13%, in middle school 19%, in high school 30%, and in college and university 34%. The outcomes support an upward spiral of causality: Children who are more proficient in comprehension and technical reading and spelling skills read more because of more print exposure, their comprehension and technical reading and spelling skills improved more with each year of education. ![]() For all measures in the outcome domains of reading comprehension and technical reading and spelling, moderate to strong correlations with print exposure were found. We meta-analyzed 99 studies (N = 7,669) that focused on leisure time reading of (a) preschoolers and kindergartners, (b) children attending Grades 1-12, and (c) college and university students. This research synthesis examines whether the association between print exposure and components of reading grows stronger across development. The five recurring themes of finding engaging books, series adherence, challenge seeking, skill deficit, and time availability indicate optimal avenues for future research and educational intervention to foster increased engagement in reading. Interview participants from Years 4 and 6 were asked what would make them read more. The 2016 Western Australian Study in Children's Book Reading collected data from respondents across 24 schools, seeking to determine how educators and parents may best support young people to read with greater frequency. ![]() While previous studies address how to increase children's engagement in reading for recreation, few allow children's viewpoints to take primacy. Therefore, increasing frequency of engagement in recreational reading can play an important role in addressing inequity in literacy outcomes once independent reading skill has been achieved. Regular recreational reading offers benefits across a range of literacy outcomes, as well as supporting learning in other subject areas, offering cognitive benefits, and potentially fostering empathy. ![]()

To be honest, I couldn't think of any American painkiller ads at all. But I couldn't think of any American painkiller ads that really had any cultural relevance. The dentist appreciates his attempt at humor, and laughs. That kind of pop culture pun must have come to him completely naturally. He works at a company that publishes magazines about television, and they always have a bunch of TVs turned on. Kawanishi-san is supposed to be smart and funny, and here he is, making a joke. It's a single line, but it matters so much. It had a very famous ad campaign in Japan with the slogan: Bufferin is made half from kindness. Kawanishi-san replies, “Are they made half from kindness?”īufferin is a low-grade pain-killer much like aspirin. ![]() Or she can give him stronger pain-killers. After Kawanishi-san gets his second tooth extracted, the dentist says that if his teeth hurt later, he can take Bufferin. He spends a good amount of time sitting at his cute dentist's office, recollecting his relationship with Ito-san. It's almost Christmas, he has a few cavities, and he is in the process of breaking up with his boyfriend. “Cavities and Kindness” is the story of Kawanishi-san. It bothered me, and I didn't know what to do. But there was one tiny scene that really stuck out. Some sloppiness about tenses here and there. When I started editing there were, of course, tons of problems, but most of them weren't so serious. I don't remember the initial translation process, but I feel like it went relatively smoothly. I remembered that I had “Cavities and Kindness” in a folder somewhere on my computer, and I thought to myself, “Wow, I should finish that.” I finished a first draft of the story and then didn't look at it again until March of the following year, when I got an email from Michael Emmerich saying that Words Without Borders was looking for a Japanese piece to include in their queer issue. This was in October of 2013, almost ten years after Don't Laugh at Other People's Sex debuted. I just thought it was a really great story and that it would be nice to work on something short that I could finish and show to people. The next day I started translating “Cavities and Kindness” without even thinking about what I would do with it. I bought the book, took it home, stayed up later than I should have that night, and finished the whole thing. ![]() Takahashi says that “it is the name of a woman who lives in an advanced capitalist society” and that “it signifies her will to live on gallantly in this world.” You see Yamazaki, then Naoko, but then the name just keeps going. In Japanese, the cola part comes like the punch line to a joke. There's the name Naoko, which is also quite common. The hyphen is a way to let the English reader know that two things are being forced together. In Japanese, the family name comes first, so it's Yamazaki Nao-Cola. Translators talk a lot about things that are untranslatable, and the visual effect of seeing this name in Japanese is completely lost in English. He wonders, “So, what kind of name is 'Nao-Cola,' or 'Naoko + Cola?' Why would she pick such a strange name?” In his afterword to the book, author and critic Genichiro Takahashi actually says he knew this book would win the Bungei Prize based on the title and the author's name alone. The unrelated short story, “ Cavities and Kindness” is appended to the end. The title piece is narrated by a nineteen-year-old art school student, Mirume Isogai, who recounts his relationship with Yuri, his teacher, who is twenty years his senior. The book's title is also really good: Don't Laugh at Other People's Sex. But I don't know if I could have connected my friend's story about an impressive book by a young female author who won the prestigious Bungei Prize, for new authors, with the physical book staring me in the face in some bookstore, if not for that name. I had heard about the book from a friend, and I knew it won an award, and then I happened upon it in a bookstore. I first picked up Don't Laugh at Other People's Sex because of the author’s cool name. ![]() If you have the legal right to inherit personal property, like money in a bank account or stocks, and the estate is worth $166,250 or less, you may NOT have to go to court. So talk to a lawyer if you are not sure. To find a lawyer, contact your local bar association's lawyer referral service or call 1-86. Generally, though, deciding if you qualify for a simple procedure may be difficult. Click on the items below for more information on these situations. Also, if you were married to, or in a registered domestic partnership with, the decedent, you may be able to follow a simple process to have your property rights determined. In addition to assets that already have a designated beneficiary (like a life insurance or a bank account), estates with a value of $166,250 or less may qualify for a non-formal probate case. It can be difficult to figure out whether you can use a simplified informal process to transfer property. Was the bank account owned by different people? Or was it to be transferred to one person upon death?īenefits like social security survivor benefits or benefits as a dependent of a deceased veteran can usually be collected without probate court. ![]() You may need to talk to a lawyer to sort out these questions. It may also be necessary to make sure that the property is in fact community property and was not somehow changed to separate property through an agreement or in some other way. If the asset was community property but there was no explicit right of survivorship, the decedent’s spouse or partner may get the decedent’s half, but it will depend on whether there is a will and the property was divided in other ways. Was the property community property with the right of survivorship? If so, the surviving spouse or partner would likely get the entire asset. Was the property owned in joint tenancy? If so, the surviving owner gets the entire property.Retirement accounts, pensions, or annuitiesĪnother important way is to figure out how the property is owned (the type of title ownership). We listed some examples earlier, but here are some common ones: That means that the decedent, when alive, named one or more people as beneficiaries to receive the asset when they died. One of the ways to decide if you can use a simplified procedure to transfer property is to figure out whether any of the assets have named beneficiaries. Figuring out if you have to go to probate court depends on many issues, like the amount of money involved, the type of property involved, and who is claiming the property. You may not need to go to probate court to obtain title to property belonging to a dead person. However any hard links made from the drives themselves will work just fine and still be valid under the user share since the hard linking doesn’t affect pooling. Anything under /mnt/users/ cannot be hard linked for obvious reasons. Both of those files will show up in the downloads share mounted under /mnt/users/downloads/ even though they are on different drives. So say you have files /mnt/disk1/downloads/episode1.mkv and /mnt/disk2/downloads/episode2.mkv. Any folder on the root of those drives will create a virtual share (or I guess a drive pool is a better way to look at it) that will be mounted under /mnt/users/name_of_share. The 8 disks are under /mnt/diskX/ with X, of course being the drive number. It provides parity and drive pooling like a RAID. The software RAID system is called UnRAID if you’re curious.
